This is something you should avoid doing. It’s really asking for a security hole in your script. When I first ran into it, I was quite surprised to see it actually doing something.
If you start reading the source code, you’ll see that if the number is too big, you get an OverflowException.
A better way to handle this is to use a BinaryReader. You can use the ReadInt32() method and use the size of the buffer you provide. It will skip over the byte for the size and you’ll only have to worry about the actual number.
Reading Flatland by A. N. Whitehead – J3L2404
In The Peace that Passeth Understanding (1907), Whitehead considered the
argument that his imaginary world is just as real as “this world”: “My
categorical answer is that on the contrary the idea of an eternal universe
was just such an idea as we are accustomed to entertain in considering this
world. It is an idea of one universe, and it furnishes us with a convenient
emotion (though an inadequate one) which we call security, or a fixed and
secure judgment about the whole world.”
This seems consistent with his later writings, but I think more than a few
people have interpreted this as meaning that he believed the world is eternal
in some Platonic sense. It is neither an accurate nor complete reading of The
Peace that Passeth Understanding, but the book still contains some interest.
The book is still available in pdf format:
