Layers are the basic building blocks that you can manipulate and edit any object in an image. Layers enable you to make multiple copies of any object on your canvas, add effects, or change their properties. To see what a layer is, take a look at Figure 1-4 and Figure 1-5.

**Figure 1-5** A close-up of the same image shown in Figure 1-4 but with added layers.

If you look closely, you’ll see there are two separate images in Figure 1-5. For instance, the white flower and leaves are not two individual objects but rather made up of one object. By adding layers, you can split an object into two separate, clearly defined layers that you can work on separately to enhance the original image. You can see this in Figure 1-6.

When you first open an image, Photoshop creates a default layer that stores your most recently made edits. This default layer is your last, most recent edit layer, which means it is the layer that you will work with when first opening an image, but it is not the last edit layer. For example, imagine you start a new image with a single layer containing a red star image. Then you create a new layer over the first layer and apply a soft-focus filter to that layer. Finally, you add a new layer above the previous, red layer and create a text layer. When you’re finished, the image should look like Figure 1-7.
