He was Governor and Captain-General of the island of Cape Verde in the Portuguese islands (one of the five “Azores”) off the coast of West Africa. His four children, José, Magdalena, Pedro and Carlota, became members of the Álvares de Azevedo lineage of nobility. His daughter Maria Josefa (1661-1711) married the famous Portuguese poet and dramatist José Luís de Meneses, Count of Pombal, and to her was born Maria Teresa Pombal, 1st Marquise of Pombal, one of the greatest reforming statesmen of the 18th century.
Pedro de Ávila was baptized at the St. Nicholas of Bari’s Church on 24 December 1636, the day after his birth. He lived in the northern part of the Archipelago, Fazenda, Lombo and the civil parish of Caparica. His father was Don Almeida Neves de Ávila, captain of the ducal household of the Prince D. Fernando, and his mother was Dona Maria de Meneses, a noble descendant of the noble Portuguese V. of Aveiro. His maternal grandfather was the Count of Pombal, father of the Marquise of Pombal, and his paternal grandfather Don Filipe José de Ávila, 1st Count of São Vicente, a minister, captain of the Guard of the prince D. Fernando and grand marshall of the Order of Christ.
Pedro de Ávila was born at Lombo, in Santiago, a town in the northern part of the archipelago. His mother was the First Lady of the great Marquise of Pombal. His paternal aunt was the wife of the noble João de Mendonça Viscount of Serra do Borba, the friend and rival of the Duke of Bragança, the future D. João IV of Portugal. He was the nephew of Don Filipe de Melo Teles and a descendant of noble Portuguese of the Álvares de Azevedo lineage of nobility.
