Getting Started

AutoCAD is available for use as a free download, in a perpetual license, or through a subscription service, depending on your needs and the features that you want. Click here for more information about AutoCAD subscriptions.

In addition to free and commercial editions of AutoCAD, there are learning tools and AutoCAD-related content available for download, all of which may be used on a trial basis, with restrictions, for educational purposes only. Check out AutoCAD Courses for some suggestions.

To start a new project, choose File → New Project. The New Project dialog box lets you search for projects in the current and other drives, and import data from many sources (see Import Data and Create Layers for details). To access the New Project dialog box, click the File menu, then click New Project. If you’re doing a drawing that you want to export to a web or mobile app, choose File → Save As and save your drawing as an.DWG file. The saved project can then be imported into a web or mobile app, or directly opened in a web or mobile app.

To save your new drawing, choose File → Save. In the Save As dialog box, locate and name your project and save it in the location you choose. In the Save As dialog box, choose a location by clicking the Browse button, then click the Save button to save your new drawing in the location you select. If you’re importing data from a file or data source, choose File → Import Data, then click the Browse button, then click the Import button to import the data into the new drawing.

Note that you can also save a new drawing as a.DWG file and open it in a web or mobile app; in the File menu, choose Save As, then select the Save for Web or Mobile App option in the Save For dialog box.

The CNC Projects section of the Project Browser lets you create and manage your own CNC projects from within AutoCAD. You can import a project and work on it using the toolbars or the Quick Access toolbar, and you can save and access the drawing from any place in the application.
